Making a Decision Between Front-Lit and Reverse-Lit Channel Letters
Channel Letter Signs
Channel letters are fabricated or formed three-dimensional letters that may also accommodate a light source. There are two types of channel letters: Front Lit also referred to as Standard, and Back Lit, also known as Reverse Halo. Each type of letter gives a different type of look and feel to a storefront. Day or night, your corporate identity will stand out when you choose to use this type of illuminated exterior sign.
Which channel letter setup is the right choice for your business? When looking at other companies’ building fronts, you see both front-lit and reverse-lit channel letters. Business owners recognize the three-fold advantage these products bring to a façade.
- Building name recognition.
- Deepening brand awareness.
- Providing wayfinding assistance.
But which display choice is right for your company? Should you go with the front-lit or back-lit option?
Reverse-lit Channel Letters Create a Prominent Halo Effect
Back Lit or Reverse Halo Channel Letters:
Back Lit or reverse halo channel letters are a slightly more elegant way of using channel letters. These metal face letters are mounted away from the wall and lit from behind producing a halo effect that outlines your company name or logo. This option offers a more memorable and somewhat prestigious look. Choose from neon or LED lighting for your Back Lit channel letters.
We manufacture these products from aluminum. They are durable and withstand weathering very well. We close off the front with the metal while we place clear acrylic or polycarbonate over the back. Next, our technicians paint the product in your specified color combination. The installation takes place with standoffs that provide the two-inch space between the letter and the wall that we need for the creation of the halo effect.
The majority of clients who commission this signage solution include boutiques, jewelry retailers, and art galleries. Because the halo of illumination bathes the lettering in a nimbus of light, it creates an upscale appearance that quickly underscores a corresponding brand message. Some clients choose to heighten this appearance with multicolored LEDs that bring another brand color to the mix. Doing so can make an excellent impression with the right façade setup.
Front-lit Lettering Impresses with Bold Colors
Front Lit or Standard Channel Letters:
Front Lit channel letters, the most commonly used, can get your name up in lights with a style that is completely your own. This versatile type of sign allows almost any font, logo, or corporate brand identity to be brought to life with nearly unlimited lighting combinations, colors, and configurations that are completely customizable based on your marketing team’s specifications.
On the other side of the equation is the front-lit setup. It is the most commonly chosen display style by business owners. When manufacturing the letters, we close off the fronts with acrylic or polycarbonate facings that we paint in your chosen tones. When the light turns on, the illumination emphasizes the color displays. We can install these products by mounting them flush to the wall or hanging them with the help of a raceway setup.
The latter consists of an elongated box that we paint in the façade’s tones. It contains the illumination hardware and makes it possible to mount letters even if there is no behind-the-wall access. In some cases, it is the only way a building management company will allow a business to hang its channel letter setup. All types of businesses make good use of this product. Chain stores, chic eateries, franchises, and service providers understand the importance of being seen.
Typically, the client’s façade setup, lease agreement, and personal taste dictate the choice. When there are no restrictions, consider the brand message you want to send. If elegance, sophistication, and style are a part of it, you cannot go wrong with a back-lit design. Conversely, when your color scheme is an integral component of the brand message, the front-lit approach may work better for you. Front-Lit Letter VS. Back-Lit Letters Sign, Which Is Better?
I Can’t Decide! Is There a Third Option?
Indeed, there is. In addition to these two types of channel letters, a third option would be a combination of both front and back lit letters. This unique fusion of front and back lit channel letters provides maximum illumination. Whatever type of signage your business has in mind, channel letters are a sure way of helping your customers locate your business. The combination of front and back-lit letters offers you the best of both worlds.
Design specifications call for colorful polycarbonate fronts and clear backs. We would need access to the back of the façade to facilitate the installation with standoffs. Boosting the illumination with additional LEDs is a good idea. The colorful presentation of the lettering alongside a subtle but still noticeable halo makes a great impression.
Combine Channel Letters With Front and Rear Lighting and You Will Get Vibrant Front and Backlit Channel Letters Sign

While both front lit and halo lit signs have their own unique advantages, a combined approach also offers significant aesthetic benefits. For instance: What Are The Benefits of (Front and Halo Lit) Dual Lit Channel Letter Signs
Front Lit vs Reverse Lit Channel Letters: How to Make the Right Choice?
Is there really a right answer in the front-lit or reverse-lit channel letter signs debate? Perhaps the folly lies in the question itself. We get many customers asking if front or rear-lit signs are more effective. Which sign is right for you depends on the design, where it is to be installed, and what kind of mood you want to evoke.
Describing Channel Letter Signs
Custom channel letters are a combination of dimensional letters and lighting setups incorporated within the sign itself. Letters are typically made of aluminum because it is soft enough to bend into small shapes, strong enough to withstand weather, and resilient to corrosion. Signs may also be made of plastic, though these are mostly suitable for indoor use. For front fascia, they may be open-faced (without any sort of covering) or have a glass/acrylic front.
Lighting is an important part of these signs. LED and neon are the most common lighting options for signs. Front-lit signs are those which have light shining through the front fascia of the sign. With reverse-lit signs, light is shone on the mounting surface to create a halo effect around the sign.
Types of lighted dimensional letters
- Front-lit
- Backlit/Reverse-lit/Halo-lit
- Front and reverse-lit
- Open-face lighting
Which Is Right For You: Front Or Reverse-Lit?
Both signs are equally ‘effective’ as advertising and promotional tools. To find which sign is right for you, consider these points.
Spacing
Reverse-lit signs require additional space behind the sign to create an adequate halo effect. Not every location has space or the permission to create a sign that protrudes a few extra inches. If that’s the case for you then front-lit signs are the obvious choice.
Mood
Front-lit signs are universal and aesthetically appealing no matter where they are used. Reverse-lit signs exude a naturally upscale charm. It’s why you will find them above commercial buildings, jewelry stores, and the like. What kind of audience you want to advertise to will help you decide which sign is right.
Practical Considerations
With front-lit signs, the lighting setup is incorporated within the sign itself. It means little or no additional space needs to be allocated externally. This means front-lit signs are self-contained and relatively easier to maintain. Reverse-lit signs, on the other hand, require the right color and quality of the mounting background. The halo effect may also require a backing plate. This may make for a visually appealing sign but are more complex.
If you can’t decide whether you want a front-lit or a reverse-lit sign, don’t worry, you can do both!
Ask Yourself These Questions
If you are stuck trying to decide between lighting configurations, ask yourself these questions:
- Visualize the sign above your frontage. Which looks better?
- Will the sign be day and night, or just in the evening?
- Will the mounting wall behind the sign make a good background?
- Are there any legal/lease requirements that limit your signage options?

Front lit channel letters are signs in which each letter’s interior contains a light source that is visible from the front side of the display. Front lit channel letters are made up of durable aluminum composite panel (ACP) backing and sides. Their front surface is comprised of a translucent, acrylic material that allows the light source inside to transmit outwards. (Sometimes a Lexan face can be used.) Color selection is vitally important for front lit channel letters because many vinyls overlays only allow for less than 1% of light transmission from the letter’s interior light source. Customized overlays are often available to achieve specific colors/hues. Another popular option among many businesses is the use of dual film. This material allows a company sign to transmit a specific color during the daytime, and then white illumination at night (which results in the highest visibility). What are Front Lit Channel Letters?
Halo lit channel letters (also known as halo lit or reverse channel letters) are the converse of their front lit counterparts. Instead of a translucent front side, these letters are open on the back and positioned a little bit away from the wall. When the light source begins its transmission, the light reflects off of the wall and gives a silhouetted appearance to the solid outline of the letter; in effect, each letter is surrounded by a “halo” of light. Halo lit channel letters can provide the depth of appearance and a more architectural look to signage. Of course, it is important that the right kind of backing material is utilized for the best results. For instance, brick may not distribute the light as well as other surfaces, whereas an extremely slick or shiny background may cause your LEDs to be visibly reflected upon the wall. What are Halo Lit Channel Letters?
What Are the Difference Between Halo Lit Signs And Front Lit Letter Signs?
Driving or walking through the streets at night we inevitably come across the different light that glows at the top of huge buildings as we bask in their glow. One always wonders at these lights, how they are used and what are they made of?
Let us let the cat out of the bag and understand the different lights that are used for advertising. Those flashy lights are not all the same. There are many types of channel letter signs:
- Standard Channel Letters Signs
- Halo Lit Channel Letter Signs
- Open Lit Channel Letter Signs
- Dual Lit Letter Signs
There are numerous reasons for using channel letters for the exterior of your buildings. A few of them are:
- They are visible from far away at all hours of the day and night round the clock
- Eco-friendly and low power consumption
- The LEDs remain unaffected by the weather
- They make your brand more prominent
- Longer life, low-maintenance, and heavy-duty
- Since channel letters are popular, they will make your enterprise seem bigger than it is
- LEDs require low voltage DC power
- Endless design alternatives and options
Time to shed light on what sets front lit and halo lit letter signs apart.
Front Lit Letter Signs
Front lit is used more often and is the most common channel letter type. It is apparent from the name that such signs emit light from the front of the letters. The shopping malls and plazas use such lights. Front lit letters are either raceway or flush mounted. Aluminum is used on the back and sides of the dimensional letter, with the interior illumination of LED or neon. The sign face is fashioned from polycarbonate with plastic trim caps or metal retainers to hold up the sign face. The lightening up of the front face has earned it the name “front light channel letter.”
Halo Lit Channel Letter Signs
Sometimes reverse channel letter is used to describe the halo lit channel letters. These are mostly used when a more refined look is required. Spacers are installed to maintain a wedge between the rear of the letters and the mounting surface so that light can exit through the end of the letters and reflect on the wall. This gives off a halo effect. Since the letters are constructed with their open side facing backward, they are called reverse channel letters.
The halo lit channel letter signs are constructed using:
- Aluminum Faces
- Aluminum Returns
- Transparent Lexan Backing
- LED Illumination
These are some of the reasons and attributes that set the two-channel letter signs apart from each other. Nevertheless, they are used for the same purpose so that the name of your brand or mall or plaza is easily visible and appeals to the people.
