Product Description of Backlit LED Channel Letters

Channel letters are a type of sign that involves individually cut pieces that come together to form a business name, for example. Most often, channel letter signs are lit up internally with LED bulbs. Standard channel letters are front-lit, meaning the lights are visible through the sign face.

Backlit LED channel letters (also called reverse lit, halo-lit, rear illuminated, or reverse pan channel letters) are the opposite. The light shines out the back. This means that they are mounted slightly away from the wall of the building so that the light can shine through and illuminated around the letters, creating a halo of light.

Over the past 20 years, our skilled experts have perfected the process of Metal Halo Lit Letters, using both 304# stainless steel and galvanized sheet with painting colors as the front side, while returns are precision-shaped by hand.

Backlit LED Channel Letters will react to a dramatic halo lighting effect. It is inserted high-quality, low-voltage LED modules or LED strip lights inside the Custom Stainless Steel Signs shape and provides a clear crystal sheet on the back. Our Outdoor Backlit Signs are with the deep of returns from 1.6-3 inches (4-8cm).

Backlit Office Signs are a bold, attractive way to advertise your business and identify your location. They are individually mounted, custom Business Building Signs that can be lit in virtually any color through the use of neon or LED lights.

So the backlit sign panels have a very strong 3D effect and eye-catching.

Exterior Halo Lit Letters

A welded aluminum dimensional letter illuminates out the back creating a “Halo” of light around the letter. The color of the light around the letter is determined by the color of the LEDs illuminating the letter from the inside.

The LEDs are contained inside the letter protected by a translucent Lexan™ back. The back is also used for mounting the letter to the mounting surface. The letters will stand off the mounting surface to create a space for light to reflect against the mounting surface.

This type of letter is commonly called a “Reverse Channel Letter”.

Reverse pan letters are commonly used in malls with more foot than vehicle traffic, or where a cleaner and more “upscale” look is desired. Reverse pan letters will typically have white lighting, but red and other colors can be used as well.

Design

Since the Halo Lit Letters and Logos are illuminated only around the edges, consideration should be allowed for how graphics will be seen when lit. Multicolor graphics on faces may need special attention such as a combination of Face Lit and Halo Lit.

Installation

Standard Halo Lit Letters are built to be mounted directly to your storefront. Electrical connection penetrates the wall behind each letter. This allows letters to light the wall behind it.

Wall color and texture must be considered when determining how the Halo will appear.

Raceway installation is possible if letters have an outline to reflect light behind letters. The outline can also be used if the mounting surface is unsatisfactory for light reflection.

This entire product is weather and rust proof for exterior installation.

Custom Backlit Logo Letters Signs

Custom Backlit Logo Signs have the LED module mounted to the back of each letter allowing lights to glow around each letter providing a “halo” effect. Custom Backlit Signs are typically made using flat cut materials like acrylic and are raised off the wall on special clear and metal mounts. The acrylic is sometimes finished with a metal face with painted silver edges to match.

The Custom LED Backlit Signs draw attention and increases the visual impact of Exterior Wall Mounted Signs for clients visiting your office, building, or shop. While Sign Backlighting is a great way to help your sign stand out from the wall, especially in poorly lit areas, only certain signs with large enough letters or bold font may apply for illumination. Custom Illuminated Signs must allow enough space on the back to hide LED modules without running into difficulty.

Low Profile Halo Lit Letters

Dimensional acrylic letters with LED illumination inside the letters. The light from the LEDs projects from the back of the letters creating a Halo of light on the wall. Letters have a painted finish and non-lit graphics applied to the face.

The glow of the halo is determined by the color of the LEDs inside the letter.

Reverse Channel Letters Benefits

Front faces of Halo Channel Letters (Reverse Lit) are covered with aluminum to allow light to spill only from the edges and backs of each letter, producing the effect of a dark letter against a lighted backdrop. Letters are mounted with a 1-2” gap between the building façade and the back of each letter so that, when illuminated, the light creates a “halo effect” around each letter’s shape.

Key Benefits

  • Letter backs are covered with polycarbonate to prevent birds and insects from nesting inside the letter;
  • The letter is circled by light creating a radiant, dramatic effect that is sophisticated, elegant, and unique;
  • Halo letters come alive at night and produce a dazzling glow.

Reverse Channel Letters Are Used By Clients Who Want An Impactful and Classy Look For Their Signage

Often called “halo” or “backlit” letters, reverse lit channel letter signs are mounted away from the wall, causing the light to form a halo effect behind the sign. The distance from the sign to the wall they’re mounted on enables the halo of illumination around each individual character, helping the reverse lit channel letters to stand out.

Instead of acrylic, reverse channel letters have a metal face. They’re also fitted with aluminum letters. Reverse lit channel letters typically have clear Lexan or polycarbonate backs.

Internally Lit Reverse Pan Channel Letters Make Great Business Signs

The illumination is from the rear of the letter giving it a “Halo” look at night. This is a very sophisticated look vs. traditional channel letter applications.

During the day the backlit channel letters’ solid color and a seamless design give a more traditional look.

LED illumination allows for the stroke or thickness of the letter to be very thin vs. traditional channel letters.

One of the things to keep in mind with reverse channel letters is they tend to cost significantly more than standard front lit channel letter designs. This is due to the complexity of fabrication used to produce the letter. The letter’s face and returns (sides of the letter) are all metal. The components providing illumination of the letter are inside the walls and center of the letter. When using reverse lit channel letters remember to make sure the backside of the letter is enclosed with Lexan or acrylic backing. This keeps the elements as well as birds from nesting inside the letter.

Another advantage of LED channel letters is they only require one penetration through the wall for each individual letter. The penetration is only about 1/8″, vs. two 3/4″ holes required for the old neon technology. This is also a significant advantage for property managers, due to the fact that taking down this type of installation is less intrusive than neon. Patching a small hole vs. two large holes does less damage to the building and looks a lot nicer after the removal of the sign is complete.

How To Make A Lighted Sign With Plexiglass

How Our Reverse Lit Channel Signs Are Made? To ensure the quality of our halo lit channel letter signs, our letters are UL listed, and we use only high-quality materials to produce your sign.

  • 1. The metal sheet is cut by a computer-controlled laser machine based on vector design files(.cdr/.eps/.ai/.scv, etc), this creates the back case and trim border of the channel
  • 2. The returns are welded at trim by bending a 2-3 inch wide (50–80 mm) metal strip to form the 3D letter shape. The trim and returns can be painted colors base on PMS.
  • 3. A translucent acrylic face is cut to fit inside the letter shape.
  • 4. Waterproof LED modules are installed on the back bottom case and screwed with the letter shape.
  • 5. When illuminated at night, channel letters draw the eyes of passers-by.

3D Backlit Logo Installation

Signage With Backlight requires a separate wire to supply power to each letter. This wire is pulled into the wall and connected either at the other side of the wall or in the ceiling. The wires are relatively thin and easily connected to a power adapter. The power adapter is similar to a phone charger that simply plugs into a regular 110v power outlet.

If dragging the cable into the other side of the wall or ceiling isn’t possible, you can also drag the wire near a socket on the same side of the wall. This allows you to hide the cables from running along the wall and closer to the power source. Once the individual wires for each letter are connected together, there is only one cable left to be plugged into the power adapter to plug it into an outlet.

Depending on how the wall is structured beneath the drywall, dragging the cables in this way may or may not be possible. It is important to check with building management or the construction company that constructed the space to see what type of structure lies hidden beneath the drywall. This will ensure a smooth final installation.

Installation Considerations For Lighted Exterior Signs

We will provide the power supply (transformer) needed to power the low voltage LEDs. Also, adequate access will be needed in the ceiling and wall to run the wiring (Read more in the FAQ) Backlighting adds a significant amount to the letter’s price and installation costs. What Materials Are Halo-Lit Signs Made Of?

Halo-lit channel letters are made of only premium-quality materials, such as aluminum, Dibond, Lexan, and acrylic. For the front and back of halo-lit signs we use aluminum or Dibond, as for the sides we use either acrylic or Lexan. The latter two are translucent materials which we use to transmit the light of LED light bulbs from the sides of halo-lit signs.

Where Can I Install Reverse Halo Signs?

Halo-lit signs can be installed in any location you desire. Be it indoors or outdoors, halo-lit channel letters are made of only durable materials and can withstand even hard weather conditions. You can install halo-lit channel letters on your storefront, office wall, in the reception area, or any other location you like.

What Rush Production Options Are Available On Exterior LED Lighted Signs?

We are happy to try to accommodate rush orders on exterior lighted signs, if possible. Please give us the date you need the signage in hand or installed, and we will try to accommodate. Also please fill out the quote form with your exact details before calling. Rush production fees will apply. Expedited, overnight, and 3-5 day, shipping options are also available.

Please note that production time begins upon payment in full and an approved proof. If you approve it late or need changes, we can not guarantee the date we promised.

How Do I Know If I Can Install Individual Backlit Letters? What Requirements Are There?

You will need access behind the wall where the letters are mounted. A wire needs to come inside the wall, behind each letter. You need access to be able to go inside and connect all the wires to an electrical junction in the location behind the sign. In short, you need access and be able to drill through the wall to push the wire in without obstruction. If this is not possible in your wall or building, consider either mounting the letters to a panel or not backlighting your signs.

Do You Help With The Design Of Halo-Lit LED Letters?

Yes, we do. Apart from manufacturing and all the other services we offer for halo-lit channel letters, we offer design services as well. Our team of talented designers is ready to create the best possible design for your halo-lit channel letters according to your requirements.

Can Halo-Lit Signs Be Installed Indoors?

Absolutely. Halo-lit channel letters can be used both indoors and outdoors. Our halo-lit logo signs are UL/CE certified, meaning they are safe for indoor use.

What Are The Specifications of Reverse Lit Channel Letters?

If you plan on commissioning reverse lit channel letters, you should know a little about how they are fabricated and what the measurements are of a traditional sign. That will help you better discuss your design.

A lot goes into a reverse lit channel letter. Here are some of the components and their specifications:

    • Face: Typically uses 0.080 aluminum and can be painted any color you want. Customization can be increased by using things like a routed face, which uses acrylic push-through. Talk to your trusted sign company to learn more about what they offer.
    • Return: Basically another way of saying “the sides of the channel letter.” A reverse illuminated channel letter typically runs around 3-5” deep and is constructed of 0.063 aluminum. Returns are welded to the face then painted to either match the face color or whatever color you desire.
    • LED Light: All reverse lit letters have illumination. LED bulbs come in a wide array of colors, but most often we use white to truly make letters and graphics pop. Colors can also be applied to lights by adding a vinyl film to the back of the letter, where the light shines through.
    • Power Supply: This is what powers all the little LED bulbs in each letter. You can choose a variety of options, including a remote power supply or wiring through the raceway mount, if applicable.
    • Inside: The inside of the channel letter is painted white to increase the reflective surfaces.
    • Back: In the case of reverse lit channel letters, the back is clear. Most companies use some kind of clear plastic, like Lexan. Vinyl films can be applied to color the plastic.

How Are Exterior Fabricated Aluminum Panel Signs Installed?

Fabricated aluminum panels are typically installed with two aluminum angle brackets. They will be provided with your sign.

What Kind Of Electrical Junction Do I Need?

The lighting is all low-voltage LED. A typical 110 line is fine. We recommend a dedicated line for the sign, along with a transformer.

How Do I Install The Sign? Is It Easy and Can I Do It Myself?

Our Lighted Letters and Lighted Logo signs are pretty simple to install. We supply a mounting template, mounting hardware, power supplies, and instructions with every order. So you’re not guessing where to put letters or drill holes. And in most cases, signs can be installed with just some simple wiring, or we can even do signs on raceways or cabinets which can be simply plugged into the wall. There are instances that require a professional installer or electrician, and we can definitely help with that – just contact us to see what your options are.

Can I Custom My Logo Or Font Style Be Made Into A Lighted Sign?

Almost all of the Lighted Letters and Lighted Logo signs we manufacture are custom-made using custom logos or font styles. Send us the artwork file of your logo, and we can find the best Lighted sign solution for you and your business. We can also custom paint Lighted Signs to match your brand colors or decor.
