A glass neon sign has the following main components:

• Tubes: Made of soft lead glass (crystal), these are heated, bent and twisted by hand, then cooled and fused together. They are later filled with various gases to achieve different colors.
• Electrodes: Pure-iron electrodes surrounded by a glass jacket are welded to both ends of the tube and wired to the transformer using high-voltage cables.
• Transformer: An electrical device that transfers from the mains to the electrodes the voltage needed to make the neon gas inside the fluorescent tubes glow. They work via a process known as electromagnetic induction.
• Backing panel/framework: Once made into the final design, the glass tubes are mounted to a backing panel or be supported by some kind of framework. Small signs tend to have a steel framework, while larger displays are supported using wood, steel, or aluminum.

Glass neon signs emit light as the result of a chemical reaction between the gas inside the glass tube and the electricity fed in through the metal electrodes.

These signs consist of glass tubes that are shaped into letters or decorative designs then filled with neon gas. When a high-voltage electrical current is passed through the gas, the neon tubing glows.

Glass Neon Signs Work

• Examine any neon sign and you’ll see it consists of a glass tube (or tubes) shaped into a particular design.
• At either end of the tube is an electrode—one negative, one positive.
• Inside the tube is a small amount of neon gas. Neon is a noble gas, meaning it only undergoes chemical reactions under high-energy conditions, like when it comes into contact with electricity. Otherwise, it simply drifts through the tube without doing anything.
• Apply an alternating current to the electrodes and the electricity creates enough energy for the neon atoms inside the tube to separate. Some shed electrons to become positively charged ions, which fly towards the negative electrode.
• The free electrons have a negative charge and are drawn towards the positive electrode at the other end of the tube.
• As the neon atoms, ions and electrons bounce around the tube, they collide with each other, increasing in energy.
• When the ionized atoms recapture their electrons to become neutral again—returning to their original energy level—they release a photon (particle of light), which is what causes them to give off a colored glow. Cutting off the electricity supply to the sign returns the neon atoms to their normal inert state.

If you are concerned about people being able to remove these, then when we make your sign, we can fix them on with silicone, meaning they would have to be cut off to remove. Any other part of the neon is perfectly safe to touch and has no risk of burning, this is a myth we often hear repeated by people who do not actually make or handle neon.
